The MRT system in Taipei probably means its the best choice. Kaosiung just set up an MRT but the tourist support infrastructure probably hasnt finished there yet. Taipei has museums, national parks, beaches and zoos, as well as famous monuments.

Kaosiung, so far, has the love river canal area to drink tea next to, a few department stores you will also find in Taipei, and a large port-area. (I have heard it is the largest cargo port in SE asia.. or was…) It also has high levels of air pollution.

Climate is not a consideration. It will be hot and humid with sudden rain anywhere in the country. If you are bothered by the heat, I would suggest Nantou County. It’s cooler in the mountains, but kind of isolated and quiet too.

Taipei is pretty much the cultural center of Taiwan, in terms of history and museums and all that.

We love Hualien, where we live, but anywhere in Taiwan will be great.

Since Taiwan’s summer is very hot I would suggest you to go to Kenting to enjoy the beautiful beach. There are many water activities such as diving, surging, banana boating, sand volleyball, etc. If you want to stay in the hotel that has a nice beach view Howard Beach Resort (http://howard-en.network.com.tw/) would be the best choice. Even though it’s more expensive I think it’s worth it. Not just fun in the morning Kenting has fantastic nightlife. There are many nice restaurants, clubs and bars. Following link has detail information about what’s good in Kenting and more hotel choices.

You can also head north to Kaohsiung and go shipping in the Dream Mall which is the largest shopping center in Taiwan or go to Liouhe Night Market to enjoy the local Taiwanese dishes. For more information about Kaohsiung you can check out the following link.
