yes the police may want to stop you for a bribe, if you don’t have a passport they will throw you in Jail.

I have traveled extensively in Mexico for years and not once have been I stopped and asked for my passport. I use it when I exchange money in a bank or casa de cambio (exchange bureau) and sometines a hotel will ask to see it. The only other time you need it is at the airport when you arrive and leave.

If you are alone, you may want to bring it with you. I’m afraid photocopies won’t do. If you travel with someone that can get the passport from the Hotel in case you need it, then don’t carry it with you so that you don’t lose it.

I always leave mine in safe keeping. I have yet to have been in a situation where I have needed a photocopy, but it could happen and may not be a bad idea to have, but never carry the real one if you can help it
if it gets stolen. you are stuck at the consulate for a not so fun time
